This is a panoramic view of the artwork in the "sundial in a silo" at Tanyard Country Club, in Louisa VA. To see a highly detailed view of the above, click here. The artwork was originally created by Moira Kavanagh. The sundial design was created by Dr. Larry Kavanagh in 1985, using a TRS-80 ("trash 80") computer to calculate the date and time lines. The sundial is 48 feet tall, inside a silo that is 16 feet in diameter. Most of the lines and time markings were painted by Damian Kavanagh. The sundial was open for public view at the autumnal equinox in 1985. Nineteen years later, the artwork was refreshed and restored by Larry and Judy Kavanagh during the summer of 2004.

The sundial called Samrat Yantar in Jaipur, India, is 79 feet tall, and is currently recognized as the tallest in the world. Other tall sundials include the K.T. Palmer sundial in Arizona, and a sundial built into the Team Disney Building at Epcot in Orlando, Florida, designed by Arata Isozaki. Our sundial in Louisa may be the third or fourth tallest in the world.
